Saying goodbye to those unwelcome toxins
Zhao Xin is highly strict with her diet. Vegetables and fruits are essential, and on either Saturday or Sunday, she eats only congee with pickles.
“It helps to clean my digestive system,” says the 27-year-old office lady.
Women like Zhao call it paidu which means expelling toxins regularly.
In traditional Chinese medicine, toxin refers to any substance that harms the body and cause ailments.
Fluid is necessary inside the human body to help nourish joints and organs, yet excessive fluids which fail to be expelled can turn into toxins that can cause puffiness, edema and many chronic ailments.
Irregular blood circulation can become toxic burdening the liver, and thus disabling its function in detoxifying the body. Eating too much refined , greasy food, desert and cold drinks can also result in toxins building up in the body which cannot be expelled naturally.
In addition, heavy metals, pesticides, chemical products, drugs and polluted water and air, which we take in unconsciously, can all become health-threatening toxins.
Skin, a mirror to health, changes along with the state of a person’s health. Therefore, expelling toxins has become a popular pursuit for many girls seeking perfect skin and a slim figure.
In response to this demand, many health products labeling themselves as toxin expellers have successfully entered the market.
Some girls devise their own toxin-expelling schedules just like Zhao. Some even adopt the seriously unhealthy practice of skipping meals completely at weekends, locking themselves indoors to avoid the temptation of food.
Zhao say she learned her method from a female friend and has maintained it for almost a month..
“It was difficult at first to stop myself from eating anything,”says Zhao. “But when you get used to it, it’s okay.”
But according to Professor Xia Xiang, vice president of Shanghai Dietary Therapy, it is simply not necessary to take drugs or skip meals to help dispel toxins from the body.
“The human body itself can expel toxins through natural metabolism without the help of medicines,” says Xia . “Liver, kidney and intestines can help dispel toxins as long as they function well.”
The liver is the body’s major detoxification organ. It helps turn digested nutrition into blood to support daily activities while detoxifying toxins. As for chemical elements such as heavy metals, the liver will isolate them and stored them temporarily.
Kidneys help filter the toxins in the blood and expel those toxins through urination. There are many toxins in urine which can be absorbed into the blood if they are not expelled in good time.
The large intestine is responsible for helping the body get rid of the debris of food digestion while waste products are also full of toxins and need to be expelled.
Apart from urination and defecation, sweating, crying, vomiting and coughing are also ways in which the body protects itself in expelling toxins.
Though there are records about skipping meals as a method of dispelling toxins to maintain health in some Taoist classics, it is not a healthy habit in Xia’s opinion.
He says skipping meals ceasing the intake of nutrition and energy sources necessary for daily activities.
And the stomach keeps working regardless of whether there is food coming in or not and avoiding meals can lead to the stomach gringding and digesting itself leading to ailments such as stomach ulcers.
“A disordered biological clock is not at all healthy,” says Xia, who suggests people eat less of add more vegetables to their diet in order to expel toxins rather than not eat at all.
“A proper diet and physical exercise can also help strengthen the related organs and expel toxins more effectively,” he says.
Sweating from regular physical exercise like jogging and other sports can also help get rid of toxins, while a good mood and plenty of sleep also help.
As for diet, fats and proteins are an important source of nutrition for the human body, yet too much can turn into toxins. Eating too much salt will also result in excessive fluid accumulation.
Drinking plenty of water and eating foods like green beans, black beans, black fungus, ginger and garlic can help the liver get rid of toxins while corn, oats, celery, white turnip, and carrot can help the kidney and large intestine function more effectively.
